Background and Bio
Salem, Massachusetts-based digital collage artist Slime Sunday (Mike Parisella) has gained notoriety for exploring censorship through unconventional and erotic themes in his artwork. Despite numerous social media bans, he has amassed a substantial following and established himself as a top-earning artist in the NFT space, leaving an indelible mark on the digital art world.
Slime Sunday’s work has appeared in a variety of publications, such as Playboy, Penthouse, Hunger, Plastik, and Glamour Magazine. His collaborations include working with renowned artists and musicians like J. Cole, Lana Del Rey, Katy Perry, J Balvin, and Beck. Presently, Slime Sunday is the art director for 3LAU and contributes as half of the audio-visual project SSX3LAU.
The Last Stand of the Nation State
Released on November 6, 2020, “The Last Stand of the Nation State” is one of Slime Sunday’s iconic NFT digital art pieces. It depicts the clash between Fiat and Bitcoin in an ancient Greek setting, featuring cameos by crypto celebrities. One of the first pieces I collected.
The Sativa State
Slime Sunday later returned to Nifty Gateway with “The Sativa State” drop to celebrate the first anniversary of Mona Sativa and The Last Stand of the Nation State. This exclusive collector’s piece is an animated collage that merges two of his most famous works, The Last Stand of the Nation State and Mona Sativa. It was first revealed at NFT.NYC 2021. I was lucky enough to win the raffle.
Slime Sunday x Playboy
On May 4, 2021, Slime Sunday released digital art pieces “2021➩1861” and “Puzzled,” which innovatively examine the evolution of art and NFTs, honoring the past while embracing the transformative power of technology and art. “2021➩1861” merges Domenico Morelli’s “The Baths of Pompeii” with a 2015 Playmate image, illustrating the fluidity of time and the marvels of technological advancement. Both pieces maintain the tradition of concealing a rabbit, inspired by Playboy magazine covers.
“Puzzled” incorporates puzzle pieces to recognize Playboy’s imaginative art direction and ingenious cut-outs, which have frequently appeared in the magazine and on its iconic covers.
My luck is never ending … I won the raffle on both of these pieces!
Slime Shop
On September 8th, Slime Sunday collaborated with OpenSea to launch SLIMESHOP, a user-friendly tool that allows users to design unique collages inspired by Slime Sunday on the blockchain. SLIMESHOP offers 5555 packs, each containing 7 layers: a Portrait, Background, Border, two Elements, and two Textures. These layers are randomly generated and come in different rarities. Users can buy, sell, and trade layers to create their ideal collage. I minted this one.
Iridescent Collection
SSX3LAU represents the incredible collaboration between DJ 3LAU (Justin Blau) and visual artist Slime Sunday. The Iridescent collection consists of four audio-visual pieces, blending unreleased music from 3LAU with Slime Sunday’s captivating animation. Among them, “Faces” had 4936 minted pieces that later transformed through one of the earliest burn mechanisms in the NFT space. I currently own two “Faces” pieces, one of which I received from 3LAU in the Punks discord.
“Gunky’s Uprising,” another piece in my collection, it was initially unnamed, with the highest bidder naming the piece. A unique 1/1 piece was minted, followed by a limited edition of 59 pieces.
The Iridescent collection’s EP release spurred discussions about monetizing these NFTs, showcasing the creative synergy between music and visual art in the ever-evolving NFT space.
On a personal note, I almost attended an event Slime Sunday hosted in NYC. Unfortunately, I was running late (got high) and would have arrived at least two hours after the event started (fell asleep). I decided to cut my losses, opting for a McDonald’s milkshake and some relaxation instead. Maybe next time, I’ll be able to join the event and experience Slime Sunday’s art in person!
Conclusion
In summary, Slime Sunday has made a significant impact on the digital art world through his daring and provocative approach to visual expression. His work in the NFT space, particularly his collaborations with 3LAU and the development of the SLIMESHOP tool, has paved the way for innovative ways to experience and interact with digital art. As the NFT landscape continues to evolve, artists like Slime Sunday will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping its future.
